Develop a New 3D Printing Technology Challenge

At YouMagine we’re always trying to stimulate new exciting 3D printing developments, objects & inventions. We want to make all the stuff in the world better, shareable and malleable. We’ve decided to give away one Ultimaker Original kit to the person who wins the “Develop a New 3D Printing Technology Challenge.” The idea is for someone to come up with an idea for a new 3D printing technology. They will describe to us how they hope to make this a reality. We will pick the best idea coupled that seems achievable on February 1st. This person or group will then win an Ultimaker that they can use to implement their technology. They will then share their invention with the world through YouMagine.

How do you win?

  • Go to the design ideas section and:
  • Come up with an idea for a new or improved 3D printing technology.
  • So not an incremental improvement to an existing 3D printer or new part.
  • You may want to 3D print glass, electronics, etc.
  • A similar 3D printing process could exist but you could want to perfect or change it.
  • Describe succinctly why you are the person capable of doing this.
  • Tell us how you will do this.
  • You will also describe to us how you plan to make this a reality and within what time frame you hope to achieve this.
  • Groups, classes and organizations may submit ideas and win also
  • The winner will be chosen on the 1st of February by the YouMagine team.

Rules for the winner:

  • The winner could use the Ultimaker Original kit to implement the technology.
  • The winner will document their development process.
  • The winner will share their success or failure with us so we can all learn.
  • The winner will share their invention with the world through an open source license of their choice via YouMagine.
  • The winner will have a deadline to show their progress to the YouMagine community by June 1st.

Hmm, don`t get me wrong, the UM is a great printer…

netherless, this contest does have a little bit of the touch of a contest that was some years ago when someone tried to find a new “revolutionary” method for printing and outsourcing the whole developement to someone else for cheap money (one UM,not even a UM+ or a UM2)

I mean first of all we should develope something groundbraking new which probably takes weeks to months to design it, to win a UM (ok i can understand it until that point) so the invention is required to be able to fit on a UM.
But afterwards when the person/group won it, it sounds like he has to develope it to show up a “production-ready” state by a given deadline. (so probably 6 months of work for a UM ?)

For me this sounds like an job offer not a contest.

Don`t know if this is good reputation for a company…

I’m so sorry if I was unclear. This is an opportunity for someone who would like to develop their own technology. We’re giving them the Ultimaker Original so they can use it as a motion stage, to help them. The results will be open source and anyone could then use the design files as they wished. We’re doing this contest in order to get more people to think about developing more 3D printing technologies. This is not an attempt for us to outsource product development. This is being done by YouMagine, which is owned by Ultimaker. But, YouMagine doesn’t make 3D printers, we are a resource for any and all people with any and all 3D printers to collectively develop & share technologies. This is our goal. We are a 3D printer agnostic platform and want to be there for anyone regardless of what 3D printer they own. We simply hope to aid in the development of better 3D printing technologies for everyone. We are continually approached by people who wish to lend or get free printers from us for projects. Instead of us behind closed doors deciding who gets printers we wish to open up the process and let anyone with an interesting idea or project submit this to the community. In that way perhaps people can cooperate, learn from each other and learn from each other’s ideas. I’ve changed the wording above from “The winner will use the Ultimaker Original kit to implement the technology.” to “The winner could use the Ultimaker Original kit to implement the technology.” I’m sorry if my wording was confusing. But, we’re not looking to outsource product development, we just want to help inspire people to make all 3D printers better. We had hoped that giving the Original away would motivate people to enter the contest and that it would be handy so they could focus on the extruder and have a working system to use as a base for their technology should they wish to do this. If one would like to make a completely new system then this is possible also. But, we would like to have the focus of this development on the extruder and in creating a new technology. There are many 3D printer designs out there. But, comparatively few people are working on new technologies. It is our aim to encourage this.
